Yeah, I read the book about a year ago and loved it, but I haven't even been motivated to rent the movie because the reviews were so "meh."
Bingo. My college screenwriting textbook said not to get high when you brainstorm/write scripts, because you'll think every idea, no matter how terrible, is ABSOLUTELY OMFG AMAZING!!! even though it probably sucks.
Possibly the biggest mystery behind this movie is how it is not only the basis for an attraction at Universal Studios where they advertise it with the boldfaced lie that it was a "hit movie," but that they're actually still running it and even expanded it to the other two Universal parks.

I will never, ever forget the one kid who had no idea that you had to push the buttons to make the doors open. She just wildly slapped the doors for a good 30 seconds, the entire crowd yelling "PUSH THE BUTTON!" the entire time. She finally gave up and plowed through a "rock" wall, her chances of finishing on time…

Same. I LOVED this movie when I was about 13 and it's still funny in my head, but I last saw it when I was about 19 and I'm afraid to rewatch it again, lest it suck now. But I'll probably do it eventually.
