Why would we jump straight to Mars colonization when we have the Moon RIGHT THERE?!?

@LittleDragon: It's not just having willing people for the trip. Hell, I would be willing to go on a one way trip to Mars! But that doesn't mean I'm qualified. Anyone who would be qualified to go on such a trip would be much more valuable here on Earth, or the moon.
