I watched it dubbed so in terms of dialogue delivery something definitely could have been lost in translation. Gives me more of an incentive to revisit it later though. I was surprised by how funny I sometimes found the shorts even at their bleakest.

Kind of, yeah. You got the family drama plus two different types of horror, and an ending that, in retrospect, kinda diminishes the family drama with its implications. That’s the classic that was most visible there for me too, but I think that movie is a good deal more meticulous and tightly structured. Its ending also works much better. Hereditary struck me as a little messy and overstuffed, although the dread-building in the second half is formidable.
