Normally starting school earlier also means ending earlier. (this year it could mean anything). Colleges started this trend of ending earlier to give their students a perceived advantage in landing jobs. K-12 followed suit because of their numerous ties to college schedules.

Uncontrolled 4-way intersections are not rare in rural Iowa. For the most part we have a road every mile on the mile. That’s a LOT of intersections with very little traffic and even less likelihood that you will meet someone else at one of the intersections. So no real call for signage.
