As far as I know, that’s what happens on all domestic flights. I get added automatically the upgrade request list for the airlines I fly so I always see how they get filled if first class wasn’t already 100% booked (I get upgraded on Alaska somewhat regularly based on my amount of business travel).

That was going to be my answer. I’ve been casually looking for one in Seattle (where they are in high demand) and I’ve seen decent looking ones for that amount.
