Well, we've gotten so spoiled by fancy character generators and the like. And games are fantasy/escapism. It makes sense that some people prefer to roll a character that is an idealized version of themselves. I'm giving humanity the benefit of the doubt and trusting that (in many cases) is all this is.

I am only speculating here, but I suspect it was largely because they were bad and dumb.
