I had both. The 2nd gen was a much better car overall. 

I used my Z-plan to get a new Mach-E for around these used money and even the eAWD Ext Battery non-GT models are entertaining enough to drive when you want to.

Having owned an e39 M5, there is a substantial boost in performance compared to a 540i. The 540i is a great car, but it is no M5.
