Does this effect in any way the quality of the file when watched on an Apple TV? Or does the ATV automatically pull the highest quality file the device and your TV can handle?

If the upgrade process does work for them, with BIOS update, I would also recommend a hard drive upgrade at the same time. If the laptops are that old, they would definitely benefit from an SSD install.
