FWIW Toy Story was nominated for Best Original Screenplay, Score and Original Song, so it’s not like that one exactly swept the ‘big’ awards either. TBH your overall point — that Barbie, for all it’s virtues, is not exactly the kind of movie that the Academy tends to shower with love — is a pretty valid one.

Thinks awards are arbitrary jokes and also thinks that only movies about certain subjects deserve them

I reread Canticle for Leibowitz every couple of years and it is always incredible. (The sequel, St. Leibowitz and the Wild Horse Woman, started by Walter Miller and completed after his death by Terry Bisson, is really good too.)

...the Motion Picture Academy declined to nominate director Greta Gerwig and star Margot Robbie—and yet the film received a Best Picture nomination, so maybe someone can explain how it did that without its director or star.

Adapt Canticle for Leibowitz you cowards.

It’s a-me, Sitting Bull!

But seriously it’s because Hollywood is a old white institution that still has yet to come to terms with the fact that the world has changed and it can’t just be a bunch of old white guys awarding Best Old White Guy to other old white guys.

Valid criticism, but ultimately they’re all various shades of awful.

I doubt that’s true (don’t ask me to list them) but even if it were that would be more because nobody was giving them worthy roles, rather than a lack of ability

This is an easy one ... for most of showbiz history Native American roles were played by Italians.

It’s taken so long because we pretty effectively genocided them.

Come for the onboard rollercoaster, methane emissions, ten thousand people on a ship and the overpriced open bar, stay for the norovirus and covid outbreaks!

Speaking of avatars, has everyone suddenly lost their kinja profile picture or is it just me?

That data isn’t available yet. The ship will be reviewed for its first year of operation, which doesn’t start for another four days.

Fellow Gen X’er. Joel felt like he was before my time even if he was still releasing new music well after I’d come of age as a music fan. He was too easy-listening and clearly heavily inspired by the music of his upbringing. Mine was a typical progression, early hard rock (the bands you mentioned) followed by Van

Having intimacy coordinators is a good idea.

Yeah, I’m a Gen X-er, and I love the Beatles, classic rock, Motown, Aretha, etc. I don’t think I’m a huge outlier in my generation with any of that. There was certainly some cheesy stuff in the 60's and 70's, but it’s easier not to be annoyed by it if it’s not all you’re hearing.

This whole confession was bizarrely inspired by Eccleston praising intimacy coordinators.

Just a friendly reminder that these award nominations are done for “comedy” and the voting body has admitted to not watching movies they nominate.   So maybe we should just not look

And Supergirl. It wasn’t close to the worst movie of the year. It wasn’t good but it wasn’t shit.
