I think the change of the type of bad guy certainly played a role. For me the real kicker was the transformation. I think I recall the first episode where it changed into a truck was when I gave up on it. Someone that watches it longer told me later it changed into a van and even a flex at some point.

Still have my TI-85, it just turned 23 years old. Got me through high school, engineering school and 16 yrs as an engineer. I use it almost every day.
