The deceased left three children - a 19-year-old son from a previous relationship, and, with his wife, the aforementioned nine-year-old girl, and a two-and-a-half-year-old boy. The little girl is the one who is young enough to still need her father, and old enough to remember him.

I had a French pen pal when I was in high school. Plus, I'm middle-aged, so we didn't have the Internet in my young adulthood.
