They’re tested and meet safety standards for performance during crashes including the way it’s fastened into the seat, etc. that testing is $$$$$. The FAA and NTSB don’t just let you Velcro a screen on the backseat like those portable DVD players in mom’s old SUV....

Probably, but because they were smaller, they offered better aerodynamics. The real issue was that the smaller diameter meant they rotated 1.6 times faster than the rear wheels, and thus wore down faster and overheated the brakes more quickly.
