R57 is more of an orange-red. I tend to go more towards the purple reds myself. And yeah, if you're doing the cold water washing, it sounds like the problem is the bleached ends :)

I haven't found them to be any more damaging than the other brands that I've used (Clairol, Garnier, the other L'oreal lines) I've always had hair that varies between shoulder-length and waist-length and it never looks fried or over-processed. With reds, it might help to wash your hair with water as cold as you can…

Have you tried the Feria reds? They're the only ones I've used (and I've used 'em all, been dying my hair for 15 years at this point) that don't fade immediately. I'm also planning to try Lush's hennas to see how that works.
