Single purpose devices are always doomed. As things get smaller, multi purpose devices always subsume multiple smaller devices, making them obsolete. Phones replaced watches, PDAs, GPS, MP3 players. Tablets replaced computers, e-readers. Watches are replacing watches (!), fitness trackers, MP3 players.
