I think you are going for movies that seemed to be aimed at little kids but were still scary. So I would go with Gremlins or Poltergeist. However, I saw The Shinning as a kid and it freaked me out.

A former teacher of mine worked as an animator on the films, and worked on animating Gollum as well. Of the 18 months she spent there, I'm fairly sure it wasn't with her thumb up her butt watching the dailies of Serkis' performance and leaving them untouched.
