I can't really comment on the quality of AMD cards, as I've never owned one—but the two nVidia cards I've worked with recently (GTX 660 Ti 2 GB and GTX 780 Ti 3 GB, respectively) have had excellent performance and -very- low heat levels under load (both were EVGA models, if that makes a difference).

Whether the allegations are true or not, it does seem fishy when Nvidia asks for "exclusive" graphical features for games when running their hardware.
