I think part of the weirdness of the first episode was that it was ordered straight to series rather than going through a regular pilot process. Network renew/cancel decisions are generally made in May, long before the new season premieres. But this is airing into June, so I guess who knows.

Yes, they're only doing 13 episode seasons. If it had been a monster hit I kind of would have expected NBC to push for more as I assume they don't have something like Kevin Bacon's contract holding them back, but that's pretty much an irrelevant point now.
