While improvements in sensors certainly have helped, the primary limitation to get the zoom levels we’re discussing here are the lenses themselves. The point is that optic lense technology isn’t subject to the rapid progress we’ve seen with CPUs, GPUs, CCD sensors, etc.

You should do a bit more research on optics and camera lenses. They are not subject to Moore’s law. They are not decreasing in cost or weight any time soon. Physics kind of prevents that.
