Considering only ten statues are going to be awarded and a lot of airtime is going to people who don't get awards, does the TV ceremony even count as an awards show? Seriously, why not just announce the awards before the ceremony and call the TV show a "salute to the Grammy winners"?

Oh Iran Contra easily. A lot of people still didn't have cable or even VCRs, and a lot of markets still didn't have indie/Fox stations. You had no option besides just turning the set off.

A superb point. Until the early 90s, there were tons of daytime game shows on the networks. Then they all died off, and Price is Right and the revived Let's Make a Deal is all that's left.

It's so weird to think there used to be regional premium channels. Kind of like over-the-air subscription TV, where you needed a special decoder to watch a show unscrambled. It didn't take very long for people to pirate it….

I've always wondered how accurate those numbers are. What kind of data are they using (computer collected, surveys, or whatever)? Are all theaters being accounted or just the bigger chains? And if they're "weekend" grosses, why are the figures coming out on Sunday afternoon?
