I think the accurate description is, “McGregor goaded his fans into creating a market for a fight that could pay Mayweather $200+ million.”

I remember Dana White gave this talk at some top business school (stanford, I think) mocking boxing for occasionally paying it’s fighters tens of millions of dollars. His argument was that fighters were more motivated to put on a show if they were paid less, and given incentives.

Connor isn’t going back to MMA any time soon. The fight game has really opened his eyes to the stronghold Dana White has on those fight purse strings. Connor won’t fight for MMA pocket change and Dana’s gonna hold tight to that money like.

This fight illustrated to me why wrestling stopped bothering with actual competition nearly a century ago. Pitting a rank amateur against a veteran like Mayweather is as close to a work as you can get without straight-up fixing the fight, and Mayweather turned it into a fairly entertaining match.

No deeper meaning at all, Todd. Just a cash grab by a boxer and a fighter.
