That’s true. Originally it was very much an us (white, Christian, upper class university dweller) vs them ( Egad,those people!) field but that changed pretty early on. I guess when you devote your life to studying a group of people you end up appreciating them even if you started out with a negative bias.

Early activity in the field was probably pretty racist, but most fields of study were like that at the time.
