Rick Veitch is a hugely underrated writer (and artist).  I'd recommend Bratpack and Maximortal to anyone curious about superhero deconstruction (and with a strong stomach).

I hope you're not disrespecting "Garden of Earthly Delights".  Maybe it's all the outdoorsy stuff I did and all the Bradbury I read as a kid, but I find the transformation of Gotham (and Moore's prose imagery has never been better) almost achingly beautiful.

Sadly, even Preacher suffers from incredibly bald self-indulgence, which is perhaps Ennis' worst trait as a writer.  That said, perhaps the leanest long-form stuff he's done is probably Punisher Max, which is a tightly-focused, nearly humorless, almost terse Ennis, which is rare indeed.
