I saw a different trailer in front of Vox Lux and didn’t bat an eyelash at that description. This whole mysterious island element is totally news to me.

Yeah, I really did not like this one at TIFF. And I was so looking forward to it, too. The casting gambit failed completely in my eyes, as everyone was noticeably cast both too old (for the flashbacks) and too young (for the present day), with the prosthetics and makeup serving more as a distraction than an asset to

The book had its moments but I wasn’t entirely convinced by where it all went by the end. Charlie Kaufman being attached to this is probably the best sign for an adaptation I could hope for.

I think The Autopsy of Jane Doe is one of the most under-appreciated horror movies of the last couple of years, and even just seeing the trailer for this obvious ripoff, it was immediately clear that it had absolutely no idea what made that movie so creepy and effective. It’s almost laughable how thorough this thing

I will forever defend the decision to hire Baz Luhrmann for Gatsby, even if the movie itself didn’t end up being great. I think he was a great choice that just didn’t end up living up to the potential.

The tea is that Season 6 is the best season of Buffy, even factoring in some series-low points like Wrecked.

From Mitski’s “A Burning Hill”:

Grant! He’s always Grant to me. I really wish they did more with that character, he was really...interesting (hot).

Wow, okay. I’ve never thought about that but now I’m going to have a hard time thinking about anything else ever again.

Not dickish at all, it seems like you’ve got a nuanced take on things and are interested in discussing seriously which is refreshing on this godforsaken site.

That’s fine! You don’t ever have to be offended by anything. There’s a lot of crude/offensive humour I find funny too. But if someone has a problem with something, my ability to look past certain jokes doesn’t invalidate those concerns.

And those same people who are telling minorities that they’re being “too sensitive” and to shut up and take a joke will, 50 years down the line looking back at the comedy of today, be the ones saying “It was a different time, there’s no way we could have known!” It’s the same old story.

Who’s saying anything about being “destroyed mentally”? It’s not that extreme. And words don’t need a harmful intention to be harmful. Are cars driven without harmful intent unable to hit and injure people?

Why is it always “audiences today are too sensitive” and not “creators back then weren’t sensitive enough”?

It is, and I’d have been fine if the movie established that timeline even if it was accelerated, but it really doesn’t. It’s unclear if Shallow is ever even released as a studio single in the movie. It’s pretty much just the one live performance that launches her, then straight to pop – if a lot of time and a brief

I also couldn’t buy at all into the idea that this unknown artist who rose to sudden viral prominence in association with a folk/country/rock star with a song like “Shallow” would immediately be convinced to switch into high-choreo dance-pop. The movie doesn’t do much to convince us that this is what Ally’s original

The trailer actually shows a significantly edited version of that dialogue. I don’t even know if that particular line she says is in the movie at all. In the movie, she talks more about how people told her to get a nose job specifically.

She’s fantastic live. She had a pretty notorious awards performance recently where she didn’t sing due to illness but instead danced to a vocal track, but that’s not indicative of her typical live performance.

LUMP is such a pleasant surprise. I had resigned myself to waiting until at least 2019 for new Laura Marling material after her excellent record from last year, but pretty much as soon as that album cycle was over this new project was announced. What a generous lady.

The singles by and large didn’t work for me and the album is really just okay at best, but Graffiti and Graves at least are worth checking out.
