Fun fact: Adam Sandler was Hess' first choice for the title character but he turned it down because, as a wrestling fan, he found the premise insulting. So, Sandler being a stick in the mud helped prevent an enjoyable Jack Black vehicle from turning into another painful Sandler vehicle.
