I made it 2/3 of the way through before I realized that it was not going to turn into something I liked. It was sad, because I’ve really loved most of DFW’s other output.

Maybe that is a legit dealbreaker for a gf, but this dude is married. He is not to blame for what happened to him. What they taught me when I was in school is that mothers who commit sexual abuse often do so by exploiting the emotional side of their relationship with their child to gain compliance and secrecy. Sounds…
Negative. He was sexually abused by his mother. That fact is not negated by his reaction to it. He needs someone to help him see it for what it was. Treating him like he’s a freak is not going to advance that goal, and anyway, they are married. People have a right to emotional support from their spouses.
It would be appropriate for the mom’s husband to freak out if it were revealed to him. It was absolutely wrong for his wife to freak out about abuse that WAS PERPETRATED ON HIM. Obviously this man needs therapy, and probably lots of it, but it’s only OK to freak out about something your spouse did, not what was done…
I respectfully disagree that he should never tell anyone but a therapist. He told his wife. She’s the one non-therapist person in his life that he should be able to trust to hear him and empathize and not freak the fuck out. I feel really bad for him that it worked out this way.
Yes to this. I believe the appropriate response from Ansari would be for him to feel ashamed (which he very likely does) at a purely personal level. Then he can get on with his life and career. Also, thank you for validating that the allegations against Franco are serious. I’ve seen so many flippant comments about…
Wow. The only one of the nominated films and TV programs I’ve seen is Logan. Usually, I’m familiar with at least of few of the big nominees for these things...
I agree with this 1000%, and yet a lot of Americans (so I’m told) won’t watch anything with subtitles. I don’t get it, but I believe it’s true. If the original is a truly great film, they’re just setting themselves up to come up short by comparison. Oldboy is my go-to example of this.
Well, I respect your opinion on the movie, but I felt like it was a crowd-pleaser, and that it objectively did it’s job. I haven’t talked to anyone who disliked it, but I may not have talked to many about it. Why, what do you feel is wrong with it? Genuinely curious.
Can we still say “cool story bro?” Because I legitimately enjoyed it.
No kidding!
Fans have been calling Dune “Star Wars for adults” since about 1979 or so.
Thanks for the links. Those were amazing! Makes you wonder what Ignatiy would have done with them!
That... Does not sound like a thing to boast about...
How... cinematic
I watched The Aviator with my husband when we were newly married, and while we aren’t really conservative, we did have a hard time watching anything with sexual content together. So, it’s not actually a sex scene, but the movie features an extended scene of nude Leo, showing his ass and I just wanted to die. It’s all…
That is a great story!
Malcolm Macdowell’s indelible performance?
Well put! I also feel uncomfortable with pretty much every true-crime flick or TV show I’ve seen or heard of, even the ones that are supposed to be really good. I like Tarantino, but this isn’t giving me the good vibes.
I submit that his behavior towards her in the first place (the assault, I mean) is a pretty good indication of how protected he felt he was.
