I mean I guess those are adaptions. And they were highly enjoyable, I agree; but I don’t consider them *good* Lovecraft adaptions if that makes sense, insofar as capturing the atmosphere, dread, or subtlety of his stories. I mean I’ve loved those movies for years, but not because they were related to Lovecraft.

I’ll have to watch Die Farbe... I generally have avoided adaptions. But it’s been mentioned more than once here, so I’ll give it a shot.

Sure. That just doesn’t make for compelling cinema.

Ah yeah, I’ve seen that one. They were burdened by their lack of budget. But yeah, their heart was in the right place.

Oh man, I haven’t. I’m not sure if you meant that in jest or not, but I really want to see it after looking at the imdb page. Thanks.

Sorry you have to deal with all of this. Sometimes I wonder why people have kids. And I truly mean that. It doesn’t really make sense to me, beyond the obvious existential meat grinder of having them. I mean obviously many men and women don’t really want the responsibility of them and are unprepared to deal with all

It often amazes me how easily he can play characters with such wide-eyes earnestness then slip into the creepy as fuck weirdness; only two years divided Jesus Christ from Bobby Peru.  He’s amazing.

I actually didn’t even think about Annihilation until you and another poster reminded me. But that’s a good point. As an aside, I grew up with Lovecraft’s work (my dad was involved with Arkham books in 70s), and I have never found a decent adaptation, and I am mostly on the side of his legacy being left alone at this

Huh. Not sure how making a film where a major part of the story is about a color that falls outside the visible spectrum will go. But at least with Stanely involved it should be entertaining (if it gets made at all).

I think the closest director in attitude if not in style (although I think that argument could be made by someone other than me) is Abel Ferrara. I really enjoy (if not love) most of Schrader’s directorial out put. I just watched Light Sleeper which while not a classic was a lot of fun; Dafoe was fantastic. I think

Your gripe seems to be less about “redemption arcs” (there wasn’t one) and more about how the characters didn’t “change” the way you wanted them to, which is always a sophisticated critical read.

how many times are you going to post this song? we get it.

I really wanted to like that one more than I did. I thought it went from interesting to obvious and hamfisted quite quickly. It seemed to predicate itself as an exposition on the lust for violence, but only seemed to be kind of a cheap exploitation film. Dunno.

I was basically with you until you said BP was better than Fury Road. I mean different strokes and all that... but it’s not even in the same league.

Glad she mentioned Ellen Meiksins Wood (RIP) and Wendy Brown; both theorists are as crucial as they’ve ever been.  I’m not very interested in this documentary, but I would just say people should take some time and investigate them instead.

oof. always a great assumption to make as a journalist.

I’ve been listening tangentially to Krallice since the beginning and still find little of interest in them. I mean on paper they sound like something I would like, but in actual execution they come off as labored and anti-septic, capturing none of the feeling and impulse of great bm (or dm). They may be impeccable

It’s definitely a bizarre redacting of history; I think the success of the first films hinged in no small part on his performance. I mean anyone is more than welcome to hate him or not I guess, but these sites are so arbitrary and fickle in their discrimination.

personally I’m all for Sex-Negativity; they put out some great LPs in the 80s.

I hate this movie, so I’m surprised I’m reading this far, but it’s a common stereotype with Brits (and other Europeans) to think that American women are easily exploitable and will fall over themselves for a dude with an “accent.” It falls into the larger narrative of all Americans are unwashed, fat rubes. If if you
