Largest source of revenue for SpaceX is private satellite launches. The government does pay for launches, but a lot of those are launches the government would have done anyways- SpaceX is just cheaper. There’s also the Starlink system, which is likely to be a pretty big revenue source as it gets out of its beta stages.
If I put my feet in the ocean for two minutes, I can say I’ve touched the water, even if I didn’t go swimming. If Branson’s altitude was enough for NASA to consider it going to space, it’s space to me as well.
The government isn’t forking out the big bucks for Space Tourism, they’re forking out the big bucks for satellite delivery and trips to the ISS. If anything moving the space transport business to the private sector has dramatically reduced cargo delivery costs for the government.
But come on, man, Branson’s stunt only barely cleared that.
