Eh, choosing a Miata as your only vehicle is a lifestyle choice . Given she asked for something practical (and prefers a hatchback) I don’t see this as a reasonable option.

Anybody who tries to get you to ride in the back of an IS is not your friend.
Are we really going to compare Fiat reliability to Honda reliability?
Not to single you out, but a ton of these suggestions seem to be throwing reliability out the window (ten year old Hyundais, ford hybrids, etc.)

Try driving across one of the great plains states.
Someone looking for a Fiero in *decent* condition here:
Short & Sweet........I hate high-mileage cars. Period.
For those of us who live up north, number of winters will always be more important than number of miles.

Put yourself in the same situation as this guy and you would’ve hit the wheel too. Not only is this obstacle completely unexpected, but there wasn’t even enough time to process it and make a decision on what inputs to give to the bike. The only real option was to hit it.

Would not start in the cold due to a small battery with a massive starter and no fuel line heater. Countless small and not so small issues, I swear it…

Or you could be like me, just buy cheap stuff and wring every last inch out of it. I hate selling cars anyway, it’s far too painful.
