Really, that is the best one can hope for when it comes to a genre one isn't very interested in.

Thank you for the recommendation! On the list it goes!

The Haunting of Hill House is one of the best (if not the best) psychological horror stories I've read. It's more conventional in that it isn't quiet as genre ambiguous as something like Hangsaman or, presumably We Have Always Lived in the Castle (presumably, because I have yet to read it).

Currently on my summer reading list: Shirley Jackson's We Have Always Lived in the Castle (I loved Hangsaman and The Haunting of Hill House), Sarah Waters' The Night Watch, and Patricia Highsmith's This Sweet Sickness and Found in the Street.

I wish he had won Best Adapted Screenplay for The Wings of the Dove and had received an Oscar nomination for Drive.

What never happened?

Have you seen her performances in the BBC single dramas, Enid and Burton and Taylor? She was terrific in both!

It's a big reason why I have so many problems with a lot of biopic performances as of late. If you are all about nailing the mannerisms but not trying to convey the essence of the person, it just reads as having a hollow theatricality.

Why, thank you!

Before Boxing Helena ruined everything.

I remember reading an interview saying she tried not to worry too much about doing a perfect impersonation and was more concerned about finding the essence of Taylor's charm and anxieties. It made a huge difference, IMO.

Plus, naked wrestling in the pond!

Those two are in my top five (always the peril of assigning one to be 'the favorite').

It's certainly near the top. The way Kate tries to hold back tears when she says 'Give me your word of honor that you're not in love with her memory' is absolutely heartbreaking.

Yeah, but it still hurts.

It happens sometimes. People just explode.

I really liked her performance too. It wasn't 'big' like other ones (namely Patti LuPone), but given the medium was film, I thought she brought a nice, quiet sadness to the role.
