I think you’re exactly right and as the gap between inherent technological differences between Sony and Microsoft (who famously sell consoles at a loss—the logic being that they’re looking at market penetration as a priority) closes, the idea that they become publishers rather than technology and hardware brokers.
A lot of gamers have two systems, or one system and a PC. Between Sony and Microsoft, the exclusivity argument is becoming more and more moot, especially over the lifecycle of on an IP that most times sees it appear somewhere else. It’s also more beneficial to the studio to have more opportunities to sell a game. But…
The studios are worth more if the IPs remain multi platform. The incentive for exclusives driving console purchases is somewhat irrelevant.
