When you have to take a quote that much out of context to make your point maybe your point isn't worth making.

What they have has worked for both of them for decades. Nothing distressing about that. Leave them be, no one is getting hurt here.

He learns the importance of self respect. Not having it is the reason he kept hurting people. He denied his dark side and in the end made peace with it as well. He's not perfect but he has a chance to make things better. It's a really good message.
