I keep looking at those savings numbers and thinking it would be so much better to skip having a kid and save that money for worldly adventure. At least I have a couple of years to decide, right?

When you’re heavy you don’t quite understand how it affects your life. Sure I feel great now, but when I try to run why does it feel like I’m running through wet sand? It’s like the old saying that ignorance is bliss. Well, I’ll just stay away from running right?

Camping is cheap. Making sandwiches and punch makes a great afternoon with a picnic. Yes, baby sitters can be expensive - hopefully eating sandwiches or just being together and reading in the park can save enough to pay for the sitter.

There’s a great 5 km hiking trail along the river in our town, and my wife and I try to hit it at least once a week. It’s a great opportunity to catch up.

I think the worst thing you can do for your kids is let your kids observe that you and your partner’s lives rise and set on the children. I would argue that the most important person in your life should always be your partner, not your children. After all, once the children are out of the house and living their own

Buy plenty of hand towels, I have ten that I cycle through. If it smells, definitely time to swap it out for a clean one.

I'd advise against washing pre-washed green. Any added step is just another chance to introduce pathogens into your product. It's been triple washed in chlorinated water by the time it gets to you so it's ready to go.

So you left your 401k with your ex-employer for 20+ years to realize the long-term rate of return on your investment, or you based your opinion and experience off of a few years of lackluster returns? Because the attitude that you're exemplifying is exactly what @mileage88 was talking about. Math doesn't lie. Think

The returns on investments being laughable comment is just dead wrong. Long term returns from the U. S. stock market, including all recessions, depressions and bubbles bursting, is right around 7% (inflation adjusted). More recently, it's not unheard of to get 12-15% coming out of the great recession. The real trick

Buy low fee index funds with your retirement money, and stop looking at the balance day after day and definitely stop worrying about short term returns (though those have been amazing for a while now). Don't sell it in a panic when the market tanks, just keep buying in with the money you have available. If you're

401k plans are universally terrible because the mutual funds available in them have unbelievably high fees that eat all the returns. Buy some low-fee ETFs and you will actually get some returns instead of handing them over to the incompetent fund managers.

#4 is a joke. Returns on investments (unless you have a ton of money) are laughable.

Psychological studies of those who build wealth vs. those who stay in debt/poor their entire lives show a remarkable difference in outlook on fate. Those who were never able to build wealth seemed to blame fate:

I hope you got as much enjoyment out of your preparations as it sounds like you did, because it also sounds like the value of the time and money you put in vastly exceeds the expected value of property loss from your home being burgled (considering the probability of this ever happening).

Wait, have I've been prepping my house for the wrong sort of threat?
