HDR is definitely the primary benefit to going 4K, not the increased resolution itself. Right now, a 4K-compatible pixel shifting projector with HDR is a more than viable alternative to true 4K. The hitch is that standards for HDR are still in a state of flux, and projectors right now cannot handle the full color

Oh no, no offense. I have just had to copy & paste that comment a lot in this thread. I added to it in your case because it seemed like you would appreciate the extra detail.

Well, the only thing that ours need rescuing from is being spoiled. . .

That would be awesome. In the Twin Cities, all of the Marcus & some of the AMC have converted, but the rest are hit or miss.

I know; those comments were more for the benefit of anyone else who might read it and think that I was insulting parents.

I have been copying & pasting this comment repeatedly for people who did not read through the thread before commenting:

Fair enough, but my point was that the seating position is the most important thing to me. If I am near obnoxious patrons, I am not going to give them the moral victory by letting them make me give up my good seats. So I will complain to management if I have to.

Oh, and the tl;dr comment shows that while I can afford a self-indulgent home theatre like that, money is still not infinite and thus I have had to prioritize rather than completing everything at once. Kids or not, I still have had to pick & choose my battles.

Sounds like you have a catheter in your future!

The point of the kids comment was not aimed at you; it was aimed at me. In other words, it was a backhanded way of explaining why I can afford to spend money on a system like that.

Not just any projector, no. The VT60 has the best black levels of any flat panel outside of OLED, and it is calibrated to extremely accurate colors. A less expensive 1080p projector might give me a larger screen, but it will be at the expense of black levels. And there is no reason to buy a higher quality, more

Reserved seating is relatively new for most theatres in the United States. In the Twin Cities area where I live, it has only been for the past several years — and for the first couple years of that, it was just one chain (Marcus.) But it is gradually spreading.

It looks like I am going to have to keep posting the same thing over and over again:

Pro tip: don’t have kids. Does wonders for your disposable income.

Then don’t go to theatres that do reserved seating. Problem solved. Not your anger management issues, of course, but you are on your own with that.

See my reply to kaizen. Tl;dr — I just built the room & upgraded the audio, and am waiting for prices on quality 4K projectors to come down a bit before upgrading the video.

You would not be surprised if you knew how much that I spent to build the room & upgrade the audio. That is my trusty Panasonic VT-60 plasma that I used ST my old house in a smaller home theatre room. We just bought this new house in February, and while the basement was finished, there was no enclosed area. So we
