Yeah, that’s what I said. The acrobatics that people will go through to make sure white people continue to get most of the acting roles is amazing. Fascinating how uncomfortable it makes people to even think about that not continuing.
Let it be Ms. Marvel, Kamala Khan!
Oh, well, given the fact that the books and the character are all about martial arts, the majority of the previous Iron Fists (and other Deadly Weapons, like Fat Cobra) were Asian and fought in Asia, and their society takes wildly from Asian culture, art and architecture, your distinction is *super* important.
Asian Americans have the highest average income rates of any racial demographic in the country. Nothing about an Asian Danny would preclude him from being a spoiled rich kid ignorant of the realities of inner city crime and poverty.
No, to make the analogy fit the Chinese ballet dancers in these movies immigrate to Russia and always wind up the best dancers in the Bolshoi, surpassing even those who have been training since birth and come from a lineage of Bolshoi dancers. And the producers, director and writers of said movies are always, always,…
You know, I was on the other side of this but going through your comment and some of the others, I can see Danny being Asian, BUT....... make him a different asian culture than the location of K’un Lun. K’un Lun is in Tibet, so make him Korean, that sort of thing. That would preserve the outsider status in K’un Lun,…
Daisy Johnson is also Asian. Mac is black, we’ve got Luke and Misty Knight coming up who are also black, Night Nurse is Latino... How about we stick to the source material. Danny Rand is white. Leave it alone.
“PC idiots”
Neither Afro Samurai nor the main character of Shaolin Soccer are white. Therefore: not racist. (Unless you believe “reverse racism” is a thing, in which case you are wrong.)
Ok the last part first about psylocke: she didn’t start Asian in the comics. She became Asian after merging with some Asian girl who thought she was psylocke or some other completely ridiculous reason, I forget the details haha.
It’s not that they need to make him Asian. It’s that they should make him non-white. Because “white character than goes into a foreign land and becomes the best at something, better than all the other actual natives” is a racist trope called Mighty Whitey.
Both Daisy Johnson and Mack were white in the comics, so, uh, you pretty much disproved your own point there.
“I do know that that happens, however, as I noted in another post, it would also take away from the byplay between Luke and Danny when they finally cross paths. I generally don’t have a problem with gender or racial changes to a character, but this one, in particular, needs to be a rich honkey.”
“I never said I was being polite either. I’m being neither polite or impolite and unlike others here I’m not offended by questions or statements that do not have insults.”
We have dozens of white guys to be out of touch about race. Half of them are named Chris. We get it. We’re done. A rich Asian-American has the same culture blindness, with a side of a chance to EXPLORE Asian-American life outside of the dojo, Chinatown, or General Hospital.
I don’t think anyone needs that to be demonstrated, yet again. It’s demonstrated on almost every tv show ever, whether they draw attention to it with actual text or just by presenting yet another world written by white male writers where every person of color and most of the women are erased or marginalized.
More Madame Gao???? Please!
Personally, I’m hoping they get Osric Chau for Danny Rand. That would be pretty cool.
