There is nothing like a talented interpreter! As a DJ in the SF bay area, I’ve seen a LOT of ASL interpreters. The best one was all perky and animated when there was a fun speaker, and then looked about to fall asleep when a boring politician took over. Impressive!

Dean Heller is always on the fence about repealing the ACA, and even Nevada’s republican governor told him it would be a terrible idea (like half of our state’s budget is Medicaid reimbursements). But I think Heller knows his ass is going away in 2018 and he needs to secure a lobbyist job by fucking over enough people

Senator Graham, who was supposed to be one of the “good ones” is sponsoring this bill. This is just more evidence that being a conservative Republican essentially means you are a worthless piece of garbage with little to no regard for other human beings.

This premise that any child born with a birth defect should be penalized is fucking bullshit.

If anyone ever needs an ASL interpreter for hire or for a PSA, hit me up. My wife’s best friend since grade school worked for the Idaho School of the Deaf & Blind (IESDB) for years (now works in the Boise school district), and has similar stories to those I’ve read in this thread (and story). Finding an interpreter in

There’s a reason why there is medical and courtroom interpreter (for any language, including ASL) certifications and qualifications. The vocabulary, needed for both, is very specific.

I used to interpret IEP (special education) meetings. It’s extremely mentally taxing and requires knowledge of the content at hand.

Exactly. You can translate something at your own pace. Interpretation means you’re a real time conduit between speakers of two different languages.

I have a friend who’s been an interpreter for years and it is a hard, skilled job. You can’t assume someone can interpret ASL any more than you would hire somebody who has a cousin who speaks a foreign language and sometimes talks to them on the phone to do translations of textbooks!

I’m a lawyer and I speak Spanish.

Yeah, not to get all litigious, but this feels like a situation in which a lawsuit or two could do a lot of good. Deaf/HOH people shouldn’t have to put up with delayed, confusing, or incorrect information wasting their time in a potentially life-threatening situation.

I’ve seen this happen a couple of times in courtrooms. Where family members will have to step in and legal certification for an ASL interpreter is a whole other thing. Even if the family member is a competent ASL interpreter they may not have a solid grasp on what’s happening in a case. Through no fault of their own.

As someone who is currently in school to be an ASL interpreter, this situation is one that happens daily. The only difference is that this one was televised instead of happening in a private doctor’s office or K-12 classroom. Deaf and hard of hearing people deserve qualified and certified interpreters who are held to

This seems like a good place to say how much I admire interpreters. I think having the ability to encode and decode in two different languages simultaneously is infinitely impressing.

I suppose the knowledge that your cat was hella smart wasn’t much consolation.

I used to burrito my cat when he needed medication. The problem was he recognized the towel after a while and I had to keep changing it to a different one.

Simply purchase food-grade bottles of lemon oil, lime oil, or grapefruit oil, and add a few drops to seltzer (sparking water, or soda) and voila!

Good. Its a donor state. They should be able to tell ICE Nazis to fuck off.

You’d be surprised at how well child predators hide their... Grossness. Can’t really blame the town. :/

Imagine running against him and losing. Where do you go from there?
