I would say it's more an issue that the expression white knight is often used so inappropriately, and to discredit people's arguements immediately, that we conclude all people who use the expression white knight are attempting to use it in such a fashion. When in truth, sometimes there really are just white knights.

I think perhaps I dislike it moreso not because it makes no sense, but because the phrase caught on and it makes no sense.
