From what I understand, it was just due to stress on the transmission.. It was only a 4 speed from the early 90’s, so it didn’t quite have the strength or efficiency of a modern automatic.

Yeah, I am fairly certain the automatics stuck with 252 hp throughout the production run, while the manual started life at 270, and was upgraded to 290 for ‘97.
