I once had one student approach another student before class about returning some books she had borrowed. The second student started screaming, “NOT NOW!!! DON’T TALK TO ME IN CLASS!” I had to run over, jump in between the two of them and physically stand between them with my arms apart and I had to yell, “STOP!” to

White males have been taught (and the media reinforces the belief) that white males and white males only are all that matter and everyone else is just a lazy whiner who refuses to pull themselves up by their bootstraps and wants “special treatment.” When I was in college many (not all but most) of the white males in

If you’ve read anything about how cultlike that church was, you’d suspect it even more. He is absolutely horrifying in person.

I’ve had students get aggressive during discussions about movies and early 20th century advertising. And in NYC no less.

I gave this a “star”, but we all know it’s really just a baby angel fetus.

Years ago in an undergrad class of mine, a student threatened to kill another student for asking a benign question about the threatener’s project. She (yes, she) had to be physically removed from the class so as not to attack. She was promptly removed from enrollment at the University.

This is why I stopped teaching my moral problems course on abortion. Attracted the types who made me uncomfortable on purpose. I changed the topic to cloning so I could discuss similar issues without attracting so much crazy but I would not teach it in Texas!

there was a student in my biology lab class who refused to understand or discuss the simple theory of evolution with the professor. There is some level of applied ignorance to people.

I was hyper aware of the political/social climate of the cities and states I was able to choose from. Texas didn’t make the cut for me back then and it feels infinitely worse now.

Students who are upset by evolution *have no business attending an accredited college*, (until they go back and pass a basic remedial science class).

You haven’t been around 18 year olds lately, have you:)

Suicidal thoughts! These kids are very vulnerable and as someone who had suicidal thoughts once I can tell you that the best way to help them is to get them the hell away from guns!

I agree. Then I think, how much of a pussy do you have to be to carry a gun to keep yourself safe from learning stuff that goes against your interpretation of a very old book.

I wouldn’t pay for my children attend a university that allowed students to carry guns on campus. No way. The biggest danger with this policy isn’t mass shooter scenarios, it’s bitter break-up, bad grades, horrible roommate, sports rivalry, drunken shenanigans, etc.

I tried to explain what apartheid was in a lecture about music from South Africa, yesterday, and was followed to my office by an angry student who didn’t want to hear about “any #blacklivesmatter bullshit” in a course they were paying for.

I’d teach the class in Texas, but I probably wouldn’t survive the semester.

As a professor myself, that’s what scares (if anything really does) me the most. I’ve had students upset because I mention evolution in an Intro Psych class. The folks who are most upset by what we discuss in class are likely the folks who will also choose to carry on campus.

I’d say very few.

Now, when they get there and get shot to death in lecture, there will be a lot of tears about how it’s the university’s job to protect them from this madness, but my impression is that most incoming freshmen choose school by name, rather than by safety concern.

I used to teach a labor economics course that covered gender and race discrimination. To my surprise I found out that those topics are controversial. White male students did not want those topics discussed. At least once, I had a non-traditional age student following me to my office after discussing those topics in

I wonder how any highschool seniors are writing off any college Texas because of their gun laws? Athletics seems important to the state, I wonder if it’s affecting recruitment?

Biology professor: “The wide diversity of similar species on the Galapagos islands can be explained by evolutiona—” <metallic clicks from around the lecture hall> “— by, uh, Jesus, of course!” <hammers are quietly lowered and rounds unchambered>
