Earnestness is not the reason they are unlistenable. Skip James and Nick Drake are completely earnest in a way that I don't think these bands really were.

But as noted below it started as a reference to "emotional hardcore" bands like Rites of Spring, and then bands like Sunny Day Real Estate and Cap'n Jazz. Not sure how the whole mallpunk got grouped in with that.
