I think they killed her in the pilot to show any viewers that had read the story/seen the movie that this is not a direct adaptation of the novella. "Oh, you think this is going to be all the same characters? Well, here's Mrs. Carmody … and she dead."

The novella is left very open-ended with nothing resolved. Although on the second last page the protagonist says that although he and his group are currently safe, he has a gun with enough bullets for everyone in the group except for him, and that if worse comes to worse, he will do what he has to and then figure out…

I want the alternate reality where King is not hit by that truck after writing book 4 of TDT series and we get his original books 5-7
