I go the opposite. I think you absolutely should write PoC characters, and women, and LGBT characters. You should write them because it forces you to research them and begin to understand them.

The worst I ever saw (and thank God the movie tanked) was Star Trek Insurrection, where the ageless, utopian society was basically all-white. Didn’t come up much in 2000-whatever but Frakes and the producers profusely apologized for it in the most recent oral history book.

That’s not true. Black folks and Asian folks totally exist, they are the exotic denizens of the exotic locales that the White folks get to mess with as part of their adventure; and that is far worse than simple erasure.
