It’s the average salary across the US, not just starting salaries, according to Google. The modal salary is probably more meaningful anyway. I didn’t really dig into it, since it was the relative order of magnitude that was at issue. The article seems to be working from the assumption of $50,000, fwiw.

Per Emily’s note below, and the corrected article, it was actually just bad math in what had been intended to be a accurate, not hyperbolic point. So, insofar as it was “unmistakable”, you appear to have been mistaken.

“company failed to realize that teachers making .0025% of what Witherspoon makes for a single episode of The Morning Show...”

That makes sense, but it took me a moment to discern that from the context. It’s certainly not clear from the writing.

Did anybody take a gander at the timeline of that third tweet linked in the Ellen post? “Freed from the tedium of sanity” would be the kindest description. The other ones linked aren’t exactly overburdened with credibility either: all “my cousin’s friend” type anecdotes, no names, few details, nothing that stands up

I don’t understand why everyone is saying the Brooklyn acid attack was an Asian woman. The NY Post appears to be the only outlet that I’ve found that’s done any original reporting on it, and they aren’t saying that she was Asian, or that it was a hate crime (acid attacks are, I believe, more likely occur in cases of do

Hey! Fuck you.

“This wasn’t helped by excessive attention given to small but vocal segments of Sanders’s aggressive online supporters.”

I always push back against the notion that the losses the Soviets suffered are evidence of a superior contribution to the war. Part of the reason that their losses were so high was because Stalin was willing to throw away millions of lives rather than admit he was wrong about strategy, or undermine his image by

If you believe that unsympathetic and shallow are bad things, I cannot for the life of me imagine why you’re defending Joan.

We should be less judgmental of Joan’s propensity to be judgmental, kind about her unkindness, and put the best possible spin on her tendency to put the worst possible spin on people. We all struggle to rise above the examples for good conduct that we have been given, and you are right that we should do better.

It would presumably be better if entertainers were not producing more entertainment, so that we would have more shelter-in-place time to play cards or something. Just in the last couple of weeks, I’ve noticed that Joan’s most unjustifiably nasty digs is are consistently aimed at young women: the bikini model who dared

Are you otherwise in favor of capital punishment, or willing the countenance the killing of people you find abhorrent?

People that aren’t famous, rich and beautiful tend to invest a lot of their self-image in being uniquely intellectual, or possessed of a particular moral goodness those with more traits of perceived social success lack. Sneering at people that undermine that self-conception by being both famous/rich and

“Outsourcing risk” is an active verb that implies that grocery store customers are choosing to have grocery store workers take risks on their behalf, thus saving themselves from taking their fair share of risk.

Purity tests for thee, but not for AOC.

It’s not a “risk” in any meaningful sense if they’re still comfortably millionaires at the end of it, which they are and will continue to be. These are never people that are going to be applying to be WalMart greeters if their schemes to slap their names on other people’s work don’t work out for them.

In my experience, people with PhDs who are actually active in their field of their degree almost never highlight their PhDs in their twitter handles. People who are not active in their field, but want to be treated as authorities, scream their degrees from the rooftops.

“ in Dallas they are already doing it.”

Another possibility is that they are lying about the severity of his symptoms. There’s no reason I can see to assume transparency from these people.
