Actually, if you had read the article, Microsoft wasn't paying for any of the movie besides a spec script that was probably going to have to be re-written anyway. The whole problem was that Microsoft wanted to keep that creative control while Hollywood paid for the entire movie.
In the end, I'd say it's more of the Halo movie failed because Microsoft was unwilling to take any risk on it. They could have bankrolled the entire movie themselves if they wanted complete creative control. Instead, they wanted Hollywood to take all of the financial risk in creating the movie and Microsoft still…
