The norm where? It is not the norm. No restaurant asks you to open a tab with a card. If you’re at a bar, ordering drinks, you may be asked if you want to open a tab or pay cash. But if you’re sitting at a table, you are literally never asked to open a tab, because your tab is billed to your table.
