It’s a little more complex than that. For one thing, his victims having a valid self defense claim doesn’t necessarily negate his. For another, it’s likely only a legal issue when he started brandishing the weapon and on. Simply carrying it doesn’t likely count as provocation as far as a self defense claim goes.
