Excellent piece, Hamilton. I totally agree. But how do you reconcile this with your own site’s lack of diversity?

Interestingly, it was Bill Clinton who made it easier for big corporations to monoplize all of major media in ‘96.
Not only that, but I don’t think the pollsters do a good job of measuring scattered, rural voters, who seem like a small portion of the voting public when you’re doing your polling in cities and larger towns, but actually make up a huge, spread-out voting block that is incredibly powerful when they have a common…
I mean, it’s a problem in that they lack diversity but it’s also a problem that the last few decades of economic development has turned their region into a fucking hell hole (ie. Applebee’s is what passes for a hot spot, small businesses and well paying jobs are long gone, etc etc).
you totally missed the point of this entire article and i say this as a queens resident
Have you guys ever watched the BBC? News is for NEWS!
Queens IS one of the most diverse places on Earth, but isn’t that part of the problem? The majority of Trump voters don’t live in places with dope Ethiopian and Georgian restaurants right next to each other; they live in places where Applebee’s is the hot spot
No one told pollsters or newspeople they were voting Trump because to do so was to be deemed a racist.
The culture had decided this was the case.
I totally agree that we need more diversity in media, and I totally agree that diversity should mean more than race and gender.
But I disagree about the misguidedness of ideological diversity. If you’re a news organization who wants to inform the entire electorate, your newsroom can’t be 100% left of the political…

Pet Peeve: “Abolish the Electoral College” people have never actually put more than 2 minutes of thought into the consequences of abolishing the Electoral College and thus should be ignored regarding political matters.
when it mattered this woman did what was right.
I know she’s become something of a darling, and good on her for opposing Trump early and often. But reading that statement all I could think was “Fuck you.” I’m starting to get sick of the performative angst of Republicans who go on and on about the danger of Trump but then act all conflicted about doing the ONE…
Good for her, I guess, but how many votes did she cast for down-ballot Republicans who share Trump’s beliefs, but are more subtle and covert about it.
We can only hope that will be her next realization, especially as she is very likely fending off a deluge of abuse from Trump zealots today.
True. With trump gone, the GOP will finally stand up for women and minorities!
One must ask why she’s a Republican. Trump is not a 2016 phenomenon, he is the pure id of the Republican voter.
Exactly. While I’m glad she voted for Hillary, she acts like Trump is an aberration of the party and not the standard bearer.
I’m glad she took a stand against Trump, the lone racist/sexist of the Republican party. Have to let them know that this will not be tolerated .
Not really
