Yeah, I think Ren is lost, but I think he will still struggle with his decision. I mean, he's such a hothead its totally believable that he killed his dad in a flash of anger and later will come to regret it somehow. I think they're doing great work with him as a character and actually dramatizing what its like to "go…
I'm going to pay extra hard attention today to that and I'll report back :)
I don't think there is any way she is Leia's daughter (well, sure, its possible, but it would be dumb, and is not hinted at all). Ren's comment about seeing Han as a father figure doesn't even kind of mean that they're siblings, it's just a clumsy bit of dialogue that establishes what we already know: that Ren and Rey…
i had no problems with the scavengers because it was quick and didn't seem to be weighted with any meaning, it was just showing, again, how desperate living on the planet was, and it kinda made sense since they were fighting around ruins that there would be scavengers there looking for stuff, and that any new material…
i don't know if it was a condition of his returning, but i guarantee it's why he was so willing and happy to do all the press leading up to it: he knew he'd never have to do it again lol
lol no kidding! still, it was a powerful moment. Like TheThinHam said, he stared the hell outta that minute! He really looked like a man who had lost his faith, was filled with regret, and just realized he cannot hide from his mistakes forever…
I also think there's some indication that Rey has some Force training…Or, at least, that's the theory I ascribe to RE: why she was left on Jakku. I wouldn't be surprised if she was a survivor of Ren's slaughter of Luke's apprentices, which would help alleviate some of those complaints that she was too powerful too…
i didn't pick up on Ren knowing of her or that she's on Jakku, but I"m going to see it again today and I'll look out for that. As for her background, yeah, they did kind of go heavy-handed with it, but i don't think it will ruin repeat viewings anymore than Owen and Beru talking about Luke's father in ANH. But we'll…
Eh, I didn't really make fans out to be anything, I just said there are jaded SW fans. I know I was one of many, many fans who were incredibly skeptical (to say the least) of JJ and Disney making a SW movie. Hype helps, but so did the trailers that showed interesting possibilities, characters and effects and hinted at…
I never did EU stuff either, so I'm just assuming that Ben Solo has a different arc than Jacen…and/or they were just wiping out all that stuff and so started from scratch on him.
Totally agree. And its not like they otherwise shied away from exposition lol.
Yeah, I think its obvious that Ren is something of a joke, and is supposed to be. An easily manipulated, weak person, with no control over his emotions—perfect for being turned to the Dark Side.
I like the idea that Ren was manipulated by Snoke (ugh he's the worst) into destroying the other Jedi at Luke's jedi academy…
1&2: Totally agree. Starkiller Base was way too powerful and destroying all those planets had zero narrative impact.
3. Also totally agree. He needs to be much more central in VIII. He's basically this generations Han Solo, except that instead of being a rogue he's a willing soldier. Think he'll take up Han's…
the JJ haters gonna run with this lol
Great point. I don't think we'll see a Ren as a complete villain in VIII, which means I think he'll be wrestling with that decision. It's not far-fetched that a guy who acts so impulsively will come to regret that action. Plus someone else on here had the brilliant observation that he kept punching his wound in order…
He also had to prove to jaded SW fans that a good SW movie could be made again, so it makes a certain sense to "go back to the well" so to speak.
I think it will be a fascinating confrontation when Ren and Rey face off again. I think it will mirror Empire in ways because that is how the mythos of Star War is built: a literal confrontation fueled by dueling emotions that ends with a choice. And their confrontation will be great because (assuming they are…
lol! well, that was kind of JJ, and definitely a good way to think of it when I go see it a second time :)
so excited to see where Rian Johnson will take this. Think he's a perfect fit to take the middle part of a trilogy, where the real character work is done and where the heroes are challenged the most and have their darkest moments.
