I think this article gives us a hint of what set things apart. The folks behind this franchise cared. They wanted to tell this story. They (apparently) weren’t quite so concerned with financing cocaine mountains through #brands #synergy as they were on crafting something entertaining.

I would see any of those with another director. Heck Real Steel felt like Rocky but with robots and I really enjoyed that because it was competently done.
