But they should, there’s no excuse not to. It’s basic economics. I get like this when people deny that fast fashion relies on exploitation.

I work in nonprofit law in Los Angeles doing direct services work. I clean up or attempt to clean up so many of these messes. I used to be angry about, now I’m just tired of it. Tired of explaining to a woman who earns her rent money selling flowers on the street that she just wasted $700 on nothing.

Here in California, Hispanic immigrants are horrifically victimized by their own. There are hordes of bilingual immigration “attorneys” and “notaries” who promise to help people correct their status, all the time knowing there is nothing that can be done. They people go to them because they trust someone who speaks

You can’t get anything right, can you? The earliest instances of nail painting are found in China, India, Egypt and among the Inca- you know, the bastions of the white race.

So your counter-argument is, “That detailed article about a year-and-a-half long examination of hundreds of salons in New York City is inaccurate because I know some people in Chicago who don’t do that.”

I think another difference between the two is that McDonald’s can’t just out-and-out break the law like these nail salons have been doing. This is not to say, of course, that McDonald’s doesn’t exploit their employees, but they tend to do so within the confines of the law (that they likely wrote/lobbied for).

The governor made good on his promise: in August, the state inspected 182 salons, 43 percent of which were found to not pay minimum wage or overtime. 87 percent neglected to provide employees with wage statements or pay stubs, and approximately three out of five nail salon employers admitted they did not maintain

I do agree that the women having their nails done are complicit. When the prices are so low, of course the workers are exploited. If you want to have someone else do your nails, at least find a place that charges enough to pay their employees.

As a former “fresh off the boat” immigrant (what people have called me and my family) I completely believe the nytimes article. You want to meet people who exploit immigrants? Look at their closest community first and foremost. Talk about brutal. This is one area where I think that the “evil white man” is only one of

Nothing more American than exploited workers protesting in defense of their abusive employers because the desperation of our economy has mind-fucked them into Stockholm Syndrome. Welcome, immigrants, you have assimilated in the most important way.

I like to point out the recent massacres of Muslims committed by Buddhists in Burma as a way to blow “lol religion of peace” morons’ minds.

Yeah, but a LOT of people think of Buddhism as an enlightened exception. This is a reminder that it really isn’t.

It’s almost like he’s just a person and not imbued with the spirit of a random god.

All major religions are fucked up patriarchies! Just a reminder.

How about some executive jail time?

I drive a Prius. Does this negate every single “shoulda bought a diesel bro” comment on Jalopnik I’ve been forced to read over the past 10 years?

@MopUpReliever: Ironically SUVs with Vermont plates is the mascot for 2 Park Slope grammar schools.

Homemade Granola is easy to make. All it takes is one part waste-of-time, one part smug self-righteousness, and one part this-shit-is-at-the-supermarket-what's-wrong-with-you.

Eh, just be thankful you didn't go to high school in Manchester, and be forced to deal with having a Lexus SUV with New Jersey plates as your mascot.
