It’s really up to the team to enforce the contract terms. If they thought he was completely healthy last season they could’ve move to fine him (then he and the Players Association would’ve sued, etc etc) but for whatever reason , they didn’t -- perhaps it was in good faith or perhaps they weren’t really sure…

If he’s healthy and chooses to sit out the season, the team can fine him the amount of his pay so, in effect, he won’t get paid if he doesn’t play (again, if he’s healthy).
